RALEIGH, N.C. – University of Florida (UF/IFAS) will host a Vegetable Growers Field Day to profile nematode control with NIMITZ™ (fluensulfone) nematicide, February 28, 2014, beginning at 9:30 am, at Ledford Farms in Homestead, Florida.
Field studies will be presented by Dr. Monica Ozores-Hampton from UF/IFAS SWFREC and Dr. Dak Seal of UF/IFAS TREC. Data presented will be specific to nematode control on tomatoes, zucchini and squash. Dennis Long, Technical Service Representative for MANA, will provide an update on efficacy, application methods and the regulatory status of NIMITZ.
NIMITZ nematicide, manufactured by MANA, is expected to receive federal EPA and Florida DACS approval later this year. NIMITZ is a broad-spectrum, non-fumigant nematicide, which is highly effective in controlling plant-parasitic nematodes. Experts estimate the annual global losses caused by nematodes on agricultural crops to be over $120 billion. NIMITZ is identified under a new class of chemistry and offers a novel mode of action with very favorable toxicological and eco-toxicological profiles.
According to Herb Young, MANA brand leader, this new offering will fill a critical need for nematode control as other organizations in the industry are phasing out older, more toxic and environmentally hazardous fumigant and non-fumigant nematicides.
“More than 1,000 successful field trials and hundreds of regulatory studies have been completed, which demonstrate the product’s effectiveness plus handling and application benefits of this innovative mode of action,” Young says. “We are proud of the cooperative research efforts between the University of Florida and MANA, and excited about the opportunity to begin sharing the crop protection benefits that NIMITZ is soon to deliver to the market.”
As part of the field day agenda, a luncheon will be hosted by MANA. The event will conclude at 2 pm.
